A Nobel Prize Led

14.12.2020

In 2014, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to the discoverers of the Blue LEDs.

They are the three Japanese researchers Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura.

Today we see that the invention of blue LEDs was of fundamental importance in miniaturising the screens of televisions and mobile phones where the mixing of blue LEDs with the red and green LEDs that already existed made it possible to reproduce light in the whole range of colours, including white, something which is essential for lighting rooms.

If we consider that 1/4 of the world’s electricity consumption is used for lighting, Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura’s discovery is certainly a major contribution to saving the Earth’s resources.
